Abstract: Through the analysis and interpretation of free space gravity anomalies, polar magnetic anomalies and two-dimensional seismic data in southern South China Sea, the faults are mainly divided into four types:NE-trending strike-slip faults,NE-trending tentional faults, SN-trending strike-slip faults and southern arc fault zone. The NW-trending strike-slip faults have a guiding role in the plate division of the South China Sea. The NE-trending faults are mostly fractures associated with the detachment structure and the faults have the characteristics of tensional stress plate boundaries. The NW-trending strike-slip faults are related closely to the expansion of the South China Sea. NE-trending faults are related to the formation of the inner basin of the South China Sea. The main SN-trending fault is the Yuedong-Wan'an fault in study area, which is the boundary fault zone on the west side of the South China Sea,with long distribution, significant tectonic effect and deep cutting. The analysis of the outcrop of Mersing tectonic belt in Sarawak of Malaysia confirmed that it is a strong evidence for the uplift of the ancient South China Sea to the surface after diving.
