Abstract

Eighteen sandstone and mudstone samples collected from the Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation in Well Xiu D1 were analyzed for major elements and trace elements by means of X-ray fluorescence and IC-MS to investigate the paleoclimate, paleoenvironment and tectonic setting of the provenance. The characteristic values and ratios of elements B,Sr/Ba,B/Ga,U/Th,V/Cr,V/(V+Ni) and Cu/Zn indicate that Jiufotang Formation was deposited in fresh water and reducing environment, which was mainly open-lake. The geochemical indexes from Sr,Cu,Rb/Sr and Sr/Cu indicate that the paleoclimate was arid and there was once a fluctuating warming event with a low-high-low temperature trend in the period of Jiufotang Formation. The indexes of CIA and ICV show a relatively stable tectonic background for the provenance that underwent medium-strong chemical weathering.
