Sedimentary characteristics and reservoir development of Hengtongshan Formation in Tonghua Basin

Abstract: The sedimentary facies, sedimentary environment and evolution of Hengtongshan Formation in Tonghua Basin have been studied, based on field geological survey, core description, testing and analysis. Five types of sedimentary facies are identified, including alluvial fan, fan delta, underwater fan, shallow lake-semi-deep lake and volcanic slope, of which the distribution characteristics are analyzed. The reservoir rocks in Hengtongshan Formation consist of conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, tuffaceous sandstone, tuff and tuff lava, with extra-low porosity-low porosity and ultra-low permeability as indicated from mercury injection. The underwater fan sandstone and volcanic rocks are favorable reservoirs in Hengtongshan Formation. The primary pore provided space for the petroleum injection. However, the large burial depth, volcanic materials and diagenesis subsequently caused damage to the primary porosity. The occurrence of large amount of clay minerals during diagenesis blocked some pore paths, resulting in the deterioration of reservoir physical properties, though there are some pores created by erosion.
