Sandstone detrital composition and provenance tectonic attributes of Middle Jurassic Shimengou Formation in Yuqia area of Qaidam Basin

Abstract: Using the statistics of sandstone detrial composition and analysis of detrital texture, the authors studied the provenance rock type and tectonic enviroment of Middle Jurassic Shimengou Formation in Yuqia area of northern Qaidam Basin. Compositional maturity of the sandstone is medium and textural maturity is relatively low, indicating that Shimengou Formation has a proximal provenance. The statistics of sandstone composition show that the tectonic setting of provenance may belong to recycling orogen. According to the Middle Jurassic sedimentary facies and paleogeography in Qaidam Basin, Qilian Mountains orogenic belt is regarded as the provenance of Shimengou Formation in Yuqia area. It is suggested that the detrial components of sandstone are originated from volcanic rocks of Upper Carboniferous Zongwulong Mountain Group and metamorphic rocks of Dakenda Sakamoto Group in South Qilian Mountains.
