New discovery of Solenites(Czekanowskialean) from Upper Triassic Haojiagou Formation in Urumqi, Xinjiang

Abstract: Based on the study in gross leaf morphology and cuticles, a new species of genus Solenites (Czekanowskialean), S. haojiagouensis sp. nov. from the Upper Triassic Haojiaogou Formation in Urumqi area, Xinjiang, China, is first reported in this paper. The new species is characterized by thinner and elongated ordinary epidermal cells, absence of papillae and trichomes, and stomata with loose orientation longitudinally or in a single orientation. Most of the known species of Since Solenites were found in the Jurassic and Cretaceous, therefore, the discovery of the new species is the first fossil record of Solenites in the Upper Triassic in China. The study of the new taxon will provide new data for the classification of Solenites and the understanding of Late Triassic paleogeography, paleoclimate and paleoenvironment in Xinjiang.
